Off-Week Update (for Ep. 19)

You know, I think it makes slightly more sense to do these on Thursday. I dunno.

First up, I’m glad you all seemed to enjoy my April Fool’s video. As I mentioned on twitter, I mostly just like being able to be goofy, and I don’t want to be overall malicious, like claiming I’m ending the series, or mentioning something equally believable. I prefer over the top, goofy things. The kind of things you WOULD have to be a fool to believe.

OK, so yeah, three videos in the span of a week. DON’T get used to it. A lot of these were pre-planned, especially the April Fool’s video.

As for the new addition of the “Sidequest”, this pretty much spawned entirely from Julien giving me the free trial to SWTOR. Yes, I do plan to do more, but besides to fill the gap after next week, I won’t be posting them on any regular schedule. Next up is the Closed Beta of “Brick-Force”, a game that debuted in Closed Beta only a week or so ago…. as long as my beta key is still valid…

I will accept beta keys for other games to do for Sidequest, but if you wish to send me a key, make certain that it’s not a key with an expiration date first. If it does have a usage time, contact me first to let me know you have one, so it doesn’t go to waste. For example, Julien’s SWTOR key needed to registered within 14 days or the key would become invalid.

Finally as far as the OFFICIAL episode goes… eh. Champions. It’s out of the way and I sure as shit ain’t looking forward to DC Universe (no, it’s not next.) My issue is that there’s something about these Superhero MMOs that brings out… rage in people, I don’t know.

My only real complaints I’ve received are about my remark concerning the powers and how they worked in Freeform. Normally I don’t mention how paid content works, but the only reason I mentioned Freeform in this review is to relay a personal experience I had. I didn’t really explain myself in the video, but it seems my main claim if “Ice is a tanking power” is what got the major reaction. When I say that Ice was a tanking power, I didn’t say it was a worthless power for damage, (which many infer I did say) but it’s not played like a mage. It doesn’t have the range, it doesn’t have the power, and if you place your stats into “mage” skills, it doesn’t work. Each power has a very specific stat that needs to be focused upon in order to function properly. I didn’t learn this through experience, I learned this through a massive strategy guide I was reading through at Best Buy, and I generally felt that creative control over your powers were limited. The story was just an anecdote. I wasn’t trying to say Freeform was worthless, or Ice was limited. I was only saying that if you’re coming from CoH, or another MMO, you need to be careful how you set up your character.

Regardless, progress on the next episode script is going well. Today was a complete wash, but hopefully I’ll make more progress tomorrow, and have it ready to go on time. That’s the beauty of the simpler games… there’s much less to “miss”.

Episode 20 on the other hand…

(Bonus “Oops I forgot to add this” addendum:)
For those of you wondering what the hell I was referencing in my end credits quote, MegaGWolf and I created a short Machinima for the hell of it and to promote the Champions episode. So I figured I’d share it here:

  1. I could get you a beta key for Path of Exile if you are interested in doing it for Sidequest.
I am already in the beta and they have a support program atm that gets you a key as part of it and since I am already in the beta if I decide to support the game I’ll have a spare key.
Here is the wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_of_Exile

I’m sure you have probably been swamped by beta keys at this point so this happening isn’t super likely but it would be pretty neato. (No red haired girl option in this game so far, dealbreaker? :p)

    • I did get someone to send me a Path of Exile kay and I’ve heard a LOT about it. Once I get the time to check it out, I’ll be sure to give it a go. (If the key I have doesn’t work, I’ll let you know if I could use your key.)

  2. (OT but this post has been up for a week) I’m just going to suggest you wait on checking out Aion for a while. The 3.0 launch has been problematic-a bunch of people including me can’t even play it because the patcher/Pando Media doohickey won’t install. The forums are full of complaints, though I obviously can’t verify any of them.

    • I kind of addressed that in the Episode 18 update. I know how terrible free-to-play conversions are when they start out and they’re not only plagued with problems, but players as well, rendering the starting experience outright unplayable.

As for your specific issue, have you tried fully uninstalling your NCSoft launcher, and then re-downloading the game? It’s an issue I ran across when installing City of Heroes, and I’m pretty sure it carries across their entire library.

      • Short answer: Yes.

In the event you do try it, take a look at the “How to Bypass Pando Media thread” in the General Discussion forum (which skips pretty much all of the problems people are having with patching). I had somehow gotten two copies of the NCSoft Launcher installed. Uninstalling those and running every program in the reinstallation process as an admin finally got me to the point I could use the bypass. I just finished the download, so here’s hoping for smoother sailing from here.

  3. ClipOnSunglasses

I do think you’ll be right about DCUO having alot of “YOU GOT SPECIFIC MINOR DETAIL X WRONG YOU NOOB!” for when you finally do the review
Seriously, you will get yelled at no matter what opinion you have on the game, I played DCUO long enough to know this. The game tries to balance being different enough to appeal to action game guys and being familiar to not completely lose the former WoW guys, so most people will think that it didn’t pander enough to their side. I mean, I still find it pretty fun, but it just can’t please everyone and your opinion will rub at least some group the wrong way.
Just learn what nuances you can, state your opinion and don’t give a single fuck about the response to it because it’s not worth the stress.

  4. I said this in the comment section for the video and Ill say it again here. The Ice Archetype on CO is the perfect soloing class. It might be officially labeled as a “tank” but I personally think thats a misconception. Because when you say tank people will only focus in on that and look past the fact it can do more than just tank.

    • I actually used the Glacier Archtype for a challenge build. Restricted myself to only the first two offensive powers (took all defensive or passive abilities) and set the difficulty to Elite, and went it alone. Not nearly as hard as you would think, just takes time.

  5. Yeah, the April Fools video was pretty meta-funny.

No rush on DCAU. Angry Joe’s is still fresh in my head & I can’t hold a though for more than 3 minutes before I get distracted. Hey, doughnuts!

  6. Already know what Episode 20 is? Seems you’re pretty far along in the schedule. Well, looking forward to the next episode, and happy Easter/Passover!
