The Terrorizing of TERA Rising
Hoo boy. Geez… you just never know how things are going to turn out, do ya?
I was originally going to do this as an OWU, but I have far delayed this beyond being able to call this an Off-Week. However, as much as I DON’T want to reopen this can of worms, I will address a few of the most common criticisms of what I’d said.
- “You hated this game, so you were unfair to it!”
Oh. This WAS me being fair. Those who attended my stream, or hell, even read what I’d written on this very site a few times know just how much I really despise TERA. Regardless I could have been much MUCH harsher to this game, but I reeled back every time I felt something was unquestionably my distaste and not being an objective representation of the game. I personally find the combat to be painfully overrated, the graphics to be “pretty for the sake of pretty”, lacking completely in immersion and substance. I’m not just including this because of a certain commenter that seems to have at least backed off from trying to infiltrate my filters, as it was a fairly common observation. However, I can’t help but wonder… had I not openly stated my distaste for this game, would everyone still think I was being unfair, and taking every standard observation and critique as a damnation of this game?
- “Playing an Elin doesn’t make me a pedo!”
I never said it did. This was probably the moment that most baffling got taken out of context. This whole part was a mere observation of the most common criticism of TERA, as well as addressing the controversy behind it. I fully understand there are players of the game, usually female players, who like the Elin because they are a “cute and girly” race that still can kick ass with giant axes and swords. It’s a fun juxtaposition, and no different from the players of WoW who wanted to play as Female Gnomes for the same reason. However, there’s another audience out there who aren’t interested in them for that. There’s a reason they’re wearing bikini bottom thongs in Korea, and despite why YOU play an Elin, there are many MANY others playing them for an entirely different reason. Those crying censorship over them being placed in (very short) shorts I can’t help but feel shouldn’t concern themselves with their avatar’s crotch, “fashion faux-pas” or not. Trust me, most of those in an uproar were NOT concerned about the “fashion choice”. Also the last sentence of the rant was meant for those people, not for people who roll Elin in general. They’re the ones trying to excuse their behavior with logic detours, like “But they’re really thousands of years old!” That does not make an avatar designed to look like an 8 year old OK to dress up in revealing clothing, and no amount of stupid arguments I have received, or have yet to receive, will convince me otherwise. I will not budge on this stance. As I said to one comment on this site mocking me for this purely opinionated observation, “I’m objective to the games. Pedos can fuck right off.”
- “Quest translation was fun, not bad!”
Story time. Does anyone remember US anime publisher “ADV Films”, original rights holder to Evangelion, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Martian Successor Nadesico, Generator Gawl and many more? Well they got a LOT of shit for “playing around” with translations, in some cases the English Dub was so far from the Subtitled track that they were almost literally two different stories. Entire SCENES would have their meaning changed. I remember specifically in Gawl when two female characters were talking about the main characters, the Japanese track was a fairly innocuous conversation about crushes, while the English Dub had them speculating if the main character was gay. This was pretty common in early ADV stuff, dropping in purely American references that wouldn’t make contextual sense in the universe of the show, or adding in lines that were never there. What ADV saw as spicing up the dialogue and “having fun”, a lot more anime fans took as being disrespectful to the original content. When you have characters in space making references to an old McDonalds slogan it not only rips you out of the universe, it completely dates it, a joke that will be killed by time. I feel EnMasse is doing this exact thing with TERA. How can you respect a story that doesn’t respect itself? This is a pretty common thing in Free-to-Plays, to be honest, especially with Korean Grinders. LUNA Online was notorious for it, but what story did it have? TERA obviously has a story, with cutscenes abound, (even if the Vekas thing is horrendously stupid) but when your game seems to not give a shit about something that’s obviously there, it comes across as being just as disrespectful as those old ADV translations. If it’s your lore, like Blizzard (notorious for references abound), fine, do whatever you want. But it’s not EnMasse’s story. It’s Bluehole’s.
- “The game isn’t grindy at all!”
Again, I think this is some out of context observations being translated incorrectly, but I feel this game is a SLOG, not a grind. When I think grind, it’s when I’m out of quests and am forced to walk around killing monsters in order to reach a new level. When I think slog, it’s when the quests themselves feel like you’re grinding, and TERA has NO imagination on what it’s doing. It’s the most basic quest types in MMOs. you kill, you collect, you travel. NOTHING interesting happens during any of these moments. Other MMOs might try to break up the monotony, changing up what you do mid-quest, having an event occur while you’re playing, but TERA keeps things at the basic formula and does nothing to change it, relying solely on the combat to carry it along… when you don’t think the combat is the best thing ever, it’s NOT fun to play. With only a level 60 cap, I don’t see why people think this game has fast progression. I even crowdsourced the question to Twitter, believing maybe I was being unfair, but a lot more people felt the game just drags on. The 20-30 minute opening tutorial followed by an even longer and insultingly simple Newbie Island is NOT a good way to start out the game. I think the game would been loads better if they cut down the time of both areas, or removed one of them altogether. (Yes, I know the tutorial is skippable later, but being forced to enter it initially, only being able to skip it by logging out and in shows they really wanted people to play it.) In any case, it’s a poorly paced game and could seriously benefit from some early game streamlining.
With that I am DONE talking about TERA. Not planning on a backtrack for a LONG time, and I uninstalled it the minute the review was uploaded. If you like, cool, great, whatever. I’m not stopping you, and you certainly shouldn’t need my approval. However, you want to know how I really feel, it should be pretty obvious by now. There’s also a “secret code” of recommendation I do only on Blistered Thumbs. I wonder if anyone noticed it yet…

Hmm, must feel good to shut up all these TERA fanboys. Yeah, I too enjoyed pointing out retardness of GW2 fanboys back in the day when GW2 was a topic worth talking about.
But I’m a random noone under a pseudoanonymous nickname. You should know better than to engage in pointless show-off wars with fanboys. Fanboys are stupid by default. All it serves (this article and your previous videos) is to make you seem like someone holding a childish grudge against TERA and its players.
In what way is defending my positions from misconstrued accusations “engaging in pointless show-off wars”? I had something to say, and I said it. I have every right to say it as they do to say theirs. I don’t hold and sort of position of power that means I have to allow people to speak as they wish as I smile and hope it goes away. There is no “childish grudge”, it’s me explaining the points and counterpoints made in regards to my most recent video. I do this with every Off-Week Update. That’s kind of the whole point of these things.
I wonder if ShitMouth is ever going to notice he’s wasting his time trying to comment on things on this site, and that he’s the only person on his side with his opinion. (Yes he tried again. I laughed at his latest baseless wall-of-text as I hit the “empty spam” button.)
For the heck of it when he said that he’s respected for his views on other MMO sites a while back I stuck that screwy handle of his in a web search. It tossed out a number of results for MMOBomb I think it was, he didn’t seem all that respected there either. I would say he’s living in his own little world so it may be a long time before he gives up, especially if you do anything on something he plays.
I expected him to try something with this article, but I needed to say it and finalize it.
Regarding your second point, it’s what I now call the pedo logic. It’s pretty much on par with religious fundamentalists. These specimens cannot help but show their love for anything loli. They put lolis as their avatar and on their signature on forums. They talk about how cute they look and what they should wear to look cuter. They talk about how much sexier they are. They watch anime centered around lolis (and probably hentai). They will drive you mad.
I find Tera to be over-rated as well. Unlike Chaos, I do find combat to be fun, but without any storyline context or anything more than “the woods” for settings, it just doesn’t last. Games fun on pure gameplay are fun for about a week, if that. If you don’t have something to engage me with long-term (beyond Skinner boxes), you lose me as a customer, and that’s exactly what Tera and every other Korean grindfest MMO has done. Hell, most American MMOs have had the same effect on me – FireFall, for example. Good ideas don’t make for a good game. A complete experience does, and “kill 10 pigs” is not a complete experience.
I don’t have a problem with the jailbait race, though. My problem was more with the red tits race.
It’s sucks you have to keep defending your point like this. Hopefully we can move on to more fun topics.
First point; I know that situation. It’s like asking a patron of classic cell animation whom loathes puns & exaggerated facial expressions to watch a Pixar movie & give an unbiased review on it.
The 2ed point immediately made me think of DeviantArt & the fact the Google Images doesn’t filter out images from that site, & all of the sexually depreaved “artists” who make My Little Pony porn & Adventure Time shipping fics, but claim not to support bestiality or paedophilia; you can keep telling us you’re not a sexually depraved deviant for liking something, but until the scary images that can’t be unseen go away, the evidence is stacked against you be association. The artists who like to draw video game heroines with F cup breasts with their mouths gagged & their hands & feet bound to a chair need serious therapy.
Point 3: Yeah, I grew up with that stuff. Same applies to DiC, Manga Corps, Central Park Media, & 4Kids. Manga Corps man…They couldn’t even pronounce either half of their own name correctly; a clear sign of quality. The translations in Trickster Online weren’t that swift. Sometimes I’d even see entire lines of unicode dingbats.
Point 4: This is always where my mind draws a blank. I honestly don’t remember the grinding experience or even what the enemies looked like in 98% of the MMOs I’ve tried. I really wish combat worked a more like Pokemon, where you have to choose one of many skill sets & then 1 of 4 moves from that skill set based on the type of enemy. That requires some good strategy & memory skills right there.
“The artists who like to draw video game heroines with F cup breasts with their mouths gagged & their hands & feet bound to a chair need serious therapy.”
I think that’s an unfair statement; sure the artists in question are undoubtedly perverted and/or desperate for some lucrative commission cheese (probably both). But bondage can be consensual and mutually enjoyable, and people can fantasize about video game girls while understanding the difference between reality and fiction. There are definitely loads of misogynist porn creators out there, but they’re not every artist and the misogynists are misogynist because of their views on women and not their fetishes in and of itself.
TERA is all about the end game and the few dungeons on the way. The levelling experience is indeed not good. It’s one of those games. You also get all of your skills too late in the game. The end game is quite very fun and much more challenging than what you get on most MMOs.
Then the game is still horribly designed; if the “good part” is the end game, then why make you wade through a dozens upon dozens if not hundred hours of crap they just slapped together that they didn’t think it would be the “good part”?
If dungeon runs are the best part then they could have just made it a lobby based ARPG like PSO, Vindictus, C9 or Blade and Soul where you run those instanced dungeons and/or go into pvp battlegrounds, and put all of their focus on that, instead of making most of the players quit the game due to boredom from leveling even thought they would have enjoyed the end game? Or they could even keep it as an open world game but just make a low level cap that has all of the quests and such focusing on training you for the endgame so that the players actually know what to do. Either way they could have taken a good chunk of the time, money, manpower and resources wasted on the dull leveling and put it into the fun part of the endgame that will keep players playing.
It could be that I never saw them as they were on YouTube or elsewhere but near as I could tell, you didn’t take too much flack over the TERA review outside of from you-know-who. His tirade of posts may have even made people that otherwise wanted to complain say “you know what, I don’t want to appear to be on the same side as this asshat” so didn’t. You even mentioned that despite how many comments were made as far as comments on the game itself goes it was among your least commented reviews.
All that aside it is funny how if you say “TERA Rising” out loud it really does sound like you just said “terrorizing” instead.
There was a few on Youtube, but also BT. Even this site had a few people being very vocal about point 2. This will a comprehensive post to cover things I had replied to in individual comments.
It saddens, but doesn’t surprise, me that you need to even defend yourself for comments made on the internet. Especially given I could tell you were holding back, as I share your huge dislike of this game. It’s the epitomy of generic kMMOs, pretty for the sake of doing so, with no actual depth to the environments, and battle that tred much of the same ground as Age of Conan did 6 years ago, without evolving from what AoC did.
I couldn’t agree more!
Also, concerning the discussion about players who choose the elin race: i think there are people who choose to play as an elin without any ulterior motive, but in my opinion this a rather small amount of people AND Jon made it perfectly clear, that those are not the ones he was talking about.
If most of the TERA player base that play as Elin really did pick that as they’re perverts, then that does not reflect well on that community at all. I would hope you’re mistaken about that.
And good fucking riddance to a blisteringly overrated game that’s wasted entirely too much of Jon’s time and caused him entirely too many headaches.
Honestly I think you should ignore these complaints, you would spare alot of headache from yourself.
Huh? What do you mean by secret code?
shhhh…its a secret
He noted it as “on Blistered Thumbs,” so I assume it’s something to do with that page. Since I don’t do BT, I’ll just have to listen to the reviews.
Since Blistered Thumbs no longer exists, I will tell you now.
BT used a system where I was forced to make two seperate titlecards, one for the video, and one for the site.
Whichever image I used for the titlecard on BT would match up with one of the images used in “PLAY, PAY, PASS”. Whichever card I was using for the BT card was my personal recommendation for the game. Most of the time I chose the card used for “PLAY”. In TERA and a few others, I used the “PASS” card.
