Halloween 2014: Return of the Poll

As was warned at the end of last year, I’m kinda… out… of Horror MMOs to look at, as it’s not exactly a common genre, and that World of Darkness MMO is still in development Limbo.

That doesn’t mean I’m completely out of potential MMOs to look at in the genre, but it does mean I have to broaden my definition a bit.

So I figured, “Here’s three MMOs I’ve heard of that I have an interest in, but not enough to make a decision.” So guess what’s back after 2 years of nothing? It’s poll time!

But before I put up said poll, let me describe the three and what I feel from nothing more than their websites and trailers.

F.E.A.R. Online
I was a big fan of the original F.E.A.R. game, but never followed through with the sequels. I’m really not sure how this game could translate to “MMO form” as it seems to be either a PvP shooter, or a squad based multi-player thing that takes you through a story.
+: Based off a franchise that could actually be scary.
-: Based off a franchise that people grew tired of. Still in Beta.

Dead Frontier
I’m pretty sure I’ve been getting suggestions for Dead Frontier for AGES, but something about it made me keep putting it on the back-burner. Maybe because I kept confusing it with another game with a similar title that was actually a Graphical MUD. As for this game, it seems to be a top-down ARPG like Diablo, but with guns.
+: Closest to the true horror aesthetic. Established.
-: Blah, dull color scheme (even for a Horror game). Market sick of zombie anything. Just did an ARPG with Marvel Heroes.

ZMR! (Zombies, Monsters, Robots!)
ZMR is a bit of a stretch. It’s really more of a tongue in cheek action shooter with emphasis on it’s ridiculous premise, but out of the options given, it might have the potential for being the most fun. Bosses in this game look amazing, and what other game can you take on Anubis with an AK-47? (TSW doesn’t’ count. That was Akhenaten.)
+: Most different of the three. Looks like mindless fun.
-: Least “horror” of the three.

These will be the only options available UNLESS, someone suggests something more suited, and there’s a general presence of players interested in a review of the suggested game. In the event that happens, the poll will be reset with the new options in October. Feel free to suggest something Halloween related, even for the sake of a future review, but make sure to at least vote on an existing option in the poll, even if you have another suggestion. Results will NOT be viewable to the public to discourage blatant upvoting of the poll leader.

DISCLAIMER: IF YOU ARE HERE FROM SOME FORUM OR WEBSITE THAT LINKED THIS POLL AND ASKED YOU TO UPVOTE THEIR FAVORITE GAME OF THE THREE, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS POLL IS NOT “WHICH GAME IS THE BEST” BUT MERELY A WAY FOR MY AUDIENCE TO DECIDE WHAT GAME I LOOK AT FOR THE HALLOWEEN EPISODE OF MMO GRINDER.
IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT MMO GRINDER IS, TAKE A LOOK AROUND THE SITE AND READ THE ABOUT AND FAQ SECTIONS BEFORE BLINDLY VOTING ON THE POLL. I KNOW WHERE MY TRAFFIC COMES FROM, AND I WILL NOT HAVE ANOTHER CITY OF HEROES FIASCO ON MY HANDS.

  1. I should have posted this way sooner. I want everyone to tell me which MMOs they think have the best & most pathetic Halloween Events.

    • I don’t know about most pathetic, but Nights of the Dead on EQ2 is generally very good. As they not only re-run previous good events, they generally add a new one or two that are fairly good as well.

  2. First off, the WoD MMO has been cancelled outright sad to say. This is one article about it, and you can find others via google. http://www.polygon.com/2014/5/2/5674352/World-of-darkness-cancellation-CCP-Fanfest

Second, I only played Dead Frontier and it’s… eh. It’s not like Marvel Heroes. You have a few hubs in DF, but unlike Marvel where they have multiple maps with different objectives and instances, DF has one giant city map, with lots of zombies and players running around, though it feels desolate half the time (sort of fitting actually) as well as buildings you can barricade yourself in. As for the objective, it’s simple. Scavenge for food and supplies while surviving in the harsh city overrun with the undead.

  3. For Dead Frontier, you’re apparently going to need to really crank up the gamma, brightness, or contrast to even see what’s going on. Sure does have a lot of unusual classes, that’s nice. But it seems to be the general consensus that the game “gets boring after awhile” & “endgame is P2W.”

F.E.A.R. is said to retain the element of helplessness if you solo but loses it when you’re in a group. Can’t really find all that much info on it, but people seem to agree that it’s “okay enough” & “surprisingly low budget.”

For ZMR, it’s compared to GoW & GGO, a lot. It’s also heavily agreed upon that it has
“terrible unbalanced PvP” & P2W is thrown around a lot.

F.E.A.R. seems to be the least popular & also the least hated.

    • P2W is thrown around in any game that has a cash shop, even if it’s nothing but cosmetics and experience boosters, so I tend not to jump into that conclusion until I see it for myself.

As for popularity, that comes with the territory. FEAR seems least hated because it’s the least known. The more people know about something the more they know someone will listen to them when they go around yelling about how cool they are for not liking it. Hell both Dane Cook and Jeff Dunham were considered great comedians until they got popular, more exposed to the public, and more people started pointing out what was “wrong” with them. The minute something becomes popular, well-known, or “top dog” is the minute it becomes “crap.” See also: World of Warcraft to MMO players, League of Legends to DotA fans.

      • I know, so I took note of what they thought P2P was. The people using it indicated that the best PvP armor purchased in the cash shop, so it seemed worth keeping in.

  4. It is too early in development for this year and it is a Zombie game, but H1Z1 would likely be a good one for next years Halloween show…though I kinda like the TF2 idea cause those fanboys are scary.

  5. I nominate Team Fortress 2. Not because it’s in any way appropriate, but because nothing is scarier than the horde of fanboys who’ll jump down your throat no matter what you say about ‘their’ game. That’s the real horror, or the obnoxious trick-or-treaters I guess.

  6. do a review of Dragon Nest when you can, it’s awesome ;)

  7. would suggest Path Of Exile great game and its on the darker side but fear isn’t bad

  8. The one I want done is the one I think will be the least “Haloweeny”

  9. Definitely think ZMR should be dropped from the list, it doesn’t fit either category of horror, or MMO. There are some zombies and such in some of the co-op stuff but that is more horde mode shooter arenas. But that’s just my two cents, if it gets voted on then so be it, its a good game thus far, save a bit bullet spongey~

  10. You might want to fix the pool, Chaos. On my side the results show as totally viewable.

    • Wunderbar. Polldaddy decided it wanted to be SurveyMonkey and switch up how it works. I’ll check the internal mechanics and see if it’s still working properly. Otherwise, I might have to make the results viewable.

EDIT: It should be working properly now.
