R.I.P. Outspark (Off-Week Update 02-11-2013)

So quick news on the MMO front. If you haven’t heard by now, or on my Twitter (either account) it seem MMO Publisher Outspark, hosts of the previously reviewed Project Powder, Fiesta and the recently shut down DarkBlood, have completely shut down, losing and shutting down all of their published titles, like the cutesy World MMO, “Luvinia” a host of other titles, and all of the previously mentioned games, save for Fiesta, who have been picked up to be published by Gamigo. On the plus side to Fiesta players, you don’t have to do anything to move your account over to Gamigo, and all assets and information have been moved over to the new site. Just patch up and you should be back in the land of cel-shaded grinding once more.
This is pretty sad news, as Outspark, while not exactly king of the publishers, had a good foothold in the market, it seemed, and published a lot of memorable titles over the years. The announcement that they lost their flagship Fiesta, was pretty much no different from an announcement of closure, and unfortunately for fans of their titles, that’s exactly what it turned out to be.  With the only publisher that actually had a media department keeping me in the loop with their plans, it’s sad to see this one go, whether you saw this coming or not. R.I.P. Outspark. 2007-2013

Also I’ve been keeping my streams up semi-lately, with playthroughs of Portal 2 Community Maps with Phelan “Phelous” Porteous, as well as trying to play more Secret World alongside Chris “Rollo T” Larios. I also tend to show off the next episode I’m working on, provided I don’t feel like recording it instead. (Yes, I’m aware I can get the streamed recordings but I don’t want to do it that way.) As a stream related side-note, the “Chip-In” I have on the bottom to allow people to donate is apparently going away due to the company shutting down. Not sure if I want to replace it or not, as I do have a thing against the ideal of accepting money for what I deem to be nothing, but I won’t refuse the generosity of others… if that makes sense.

So, let’s go quick over “Path of Exile” which… well it held up well. Not nearly as popular or well loved as DDO, but it’s gaining a following of very impressed people. I, again, am not a major fan of the dungeon grinder, but I see the charm in this game. I don’t plan on deleting it, and I’d like to see how it improves later on.

Yes, the next episode is TERA. Yes, I am NOT a fan of TERA, but this isn’t going to be a Maple Story review of ranting… However, like Maple Story, I find things in it that I can enjoy, but the fans tend to render the game’s faults insufferable with their refusal to address them as such. I’m sure I’ll mention it soon enough.

My main concern is that I won’t be able to finish this episode, as I’m heading out of state for a week, from the 17th, to the 24th. Cutting into both this episode and the next. Stupid tiny month. Let’s hope I can get some progress done this week. I’m already off to such a bad start!

  1. Cutest Game Luvinia!!! NO WAY, soltice was the best… i’m so sad that outspark went offline… all though i agree with you Sin… i dont think they deserved it but it’s still sad that they tried to make some better games…

  2. ah fiesta… i was in the beta and quit once it was nothing but 6 hour grinds to get 10% exp… lvl 115 eluded me but at least i quit the game before the new takeover happened. everyone i know that still plays says its horrible now and i wont be surprised if they follow me to minecraft or something XD

  3. I’m glad I was able to be apart of the 6 year experience with OutSpark. It’s such a shame they are not longer owners of the games. I will miss them. And sadly I feel Fiesta won’t be here much longer because ever since Gamingo took over SO MANY** players have quit. :( R.I.P. Outspark and soon to be Fiesta. :(

  4. I just want to play Secret of the Solstice again best MMO i ever played.

  5. I didn’t have any of their games on queue, but I always reserve my Feels for developers & artists.

Speaking of returning to previously addressed games & cutesy 2D Korean MMOs, has Trickster Online had any significant updates in the past mmmm 2 years? I remember you saying you liked that one & I was wondering if I should update it.

  6. Wait a minute, there’s a ChaosD1 Twitch account?

Wait a minute, there’s a ChaosD1 Twitch account, and he’s already done a stream of TERA?

I need to set a day aside just to watch these videos. Like ASAP.

(…and now I fear the possibility of a Scarlet Blade stream. I don’t think I’d be able to stomach watching footage of that for more than half a minute, without being creep-ed the hell out. Like, not even as a “ha-ha, look how silly it is” joke.)

    • He did that on megaGWolf’s stream

      • He did what on MegaGWolf’s stream?
I haven’t watched many of MegaGWolf’s stream videos so far. It’s funny, because I know he’s associated with a lot of the “Channel Aweseome” type people, but the way I know of MegaGWolf is actually through a lot of the “casual” Let’s Play-ers like Mike Nnemonic, Crowley, and ZetaPlays.

Wait, why was I here commenting again? Oh yeah. I was browsing Steam Greenlight last night and saw DarkBlood. I was all “whaaa?”, considering recent events. Only after digging through the comments a bit did I realize that it was only still there because whoever started the Greenlight entry for them hadn’t bothered to remove it yet. Kind of disappointed, for in that moment, I thought maybe, just maybe, Outspark could have been trying one last bid to stay in the business.

  7. I’m going to miss Outspark. ): I didn’t play most of their games (mostly just Luvinia, and Secret of the Solstice before it closed), but Outspark was still my first venture into the world of free to play MMOs. Sort of sentimental, I suppose. I hope everyone in the company finds good work elsewhere, because they were pretty cool and helpful towards their fanbase.

But then again, Luvinia was getting to be pretty empty, so it was probably going to go down soon regardless.

    • Luve had been empty for some time, I had played that one and it felt near the end only like a cash-cow with now actually bug fixes. of course, that could have changed after i was gone, but now that doesn’t seem to matter anyway..

though still, outspark gone.. i didn’t always liked how they handled their games, but the games were the once i actually played for a very long time, with a good player-base and.. that really makes me incredible sad.
(I played Luvinia till Level 81 or 89.. i don’t quite remember the restriction.. I was a Sage.. it was really fun. (and I played Secret of Solstice..)
Really, i will miss Outspark. ..all MMOs I really was invested in, are dying.. meh..

  8. Hmm, don’t like to hear about decent companies flopping, but I can’t say any of there games held me long enough to stay on them sadly. (The few I tried any way.) Also I know how you feel about getting videos done. Been trying to get my Superman reviews done asap for a mid season early next month, had all weekend and I just never felt like doing it. Can’t get up the enthusiasm for some reason, though you’re problem seems to be more of a time thing to witch, ya Feb. tends to screw us over like that some years.

  9. Never played an outspark game, but still kinda sad to see them go. While not being the “king” of the MMO world, they were ate the very least inoffensive and actually quite considerate to their players. Also, while never attracting my interest, games like Project Powder and Fiesta had this simple, non arrogant feel to them. They were what they were and it never seemed like they were trying to be anything more, unlike all the so called “WoW killers” that try to make themselves out to be the second coming of Christ (looking at you Guild Wars 2). All in all, can’t say I’m broken up about this, but still kinda sad to see them go.

  10. Damn, Outspark were good people. In other news of games leaving, Fantasy Tennis is also planned to go byebye in March.

A lot of good people and places leaving early this year, it seems.

    • can’t agree less. Outspark employed a gm that openly cursed out an entire server of sos on more than one occasion and never faced any consequences for it. They made a lot of money off of that game from fans that only wanted to play a simple game with their friends, and, rather than use that money to improve SoS they pumped it into fail titles that anyone could see would die off in under a year. They got what they deserved.
